3 Modifications To Make To A House To Be More Accessible To The Blind

If you are blind or are visually impaired and you are having your home custom built, there are some things that you can ask for the builder to add things into the design that will make your house more user-friendly for you. Building a house is an investment in time and money, and you want to make sure that it works perfectly for you. So, what are some of the things that the builder can do for you?

Built-ins

One of the things that you can ask the builder to do is to add in a lot of built in things like bookcases or cabinets outside of the kitchen or bathroom. Have those things already built into your house means that they are going to be out of your way and flush with the walls. It will eliminate clutter and give you plenty of places to store your books or whatever else you need to store.

Railings

Another thing that you can talk to the builder about is bars in places like your bathroom. While there are aftermarket bars that you can add to your bathroom after it has been built, if you ask the builder to install them while the house is being built. One reason for this is because they can make sure that the bar is secured to a stud, or they can add in an addition stud or support for the bar to be attached to, if you need it somewhere that won't meet the existing studs. The reason to have the bar attached to a stud is that it will allow the bar to be more secure and for it to bear a lot of weight.

Braille Marked Closets

You can also ask the builder to install Braille tiles in easily accessible places in your closets. Those tiles can say things like skirts, pants, towels, etc. If the Braille tiles are also labeled with the words, anyone who may help you with putting laundry or whatever will make sure that everything is put in the right place. That means that you won't end up with things being lost or in the wrong place, making your life harder.

If you are going to have your own house built and you are blind or visually impaired, you might want to make sure that you are going to have a house that has been modified with accommodations that will work for you. For more information, reach out to custom home builders near you.

About Me

Vinyl Siding Variations

Are you tired of painting your home’s exterior every year or so? I was. It’s expensive to hire painters, and I’m getting too old to do it myself. That’s why I decided to have vinyl siding installed on the outside of my home. It was a great choice. The color never fades, and it’s easy to clean. You can even choose insulated vinyl siding if you want to make sure that your home’s energy bill gets a boost from your siding choice. I started this blog to talk about the benefits and drawbacks of vinyl siding, how to tell if it’s right for your home, and how to maintain it. You may be surprised to find that vinyl siding is the right choice for you.
