Things You Should Know When Your Warehouse Needs More Storage Space

As your business grows, you are going to need more space in your warehouse for inventory and supplies. Once the floor is filled with as much as possible, while still leaving pathways, you will need to either mover to a larger building or start to stack the pallets. Of course, stacking the pallets on top of each other is not very safe so you will need pallet racks. However, it is not as simple as buying a few metal racks and placing pallets on the shelves. Here are a few things you need to know before you buy anything:

Pallet Rack Permits

Many municipalities require a permit to use a rack system for your pallets. This is due to safety reason. You may need one permit from the city planning department and one from the fire department, depending on how high the racks will be. You will need plans detailing your warehouse and how it is built. You will also need plans detailing the rack system, where it will go in the warehouse and what materials will be used to make it. If you are buying the system premade, there will probably be a schematic in the set already. Make sure to have the approval from the fire department before applying for the permit from the city.

Professional Requirements

You may not be able to apply for the permit on your own. The plans may need the seal of a certified engineer. While you can create the drawings of the floor plan yourself, the engineer will need to see your warehouse and approve the plan. If there are structural issues with what you have drawn, you will need to make changes before he or she will give them a seal. Once the city has gone over all the paperwork, a licensed contractor will receive the permit to do the work. Finally, a state inspector will need to inspect the system once it is in place, but before any pallets are placed on it.

It might seem like a bit of a chore to have to go through the steps just to put your pallets up off the ground, but it is for the safety of your employees and your inventory. Without the steps, you may end up with a system that fails. The injuries and losses from a failure could cost the business a lot of money. This cost would be in addition to any fines you receive because of the lack of a permit. Getting a permit might be a chore, but it will save you money.
