3 Things To Know About Replacing A Dented Garage Door Panel

Most garage doors are constructed with several panels. These panels are connected with hinges, which allow them to move as the door opens and closes. If one of your panels is damaged and is preventing the door from working properly, you could fix this problem by replacing the one bad panel. As you plan to do this project, here are three things to keep in mind.

This Is Not Always The Best Method

If only one panel is damaged and the rest of the door looks good and works well, replacing just one panel is a great option. On the other hand, you may want to consider replacing the entire door if there is damage on any other panels, or if the door is worn-out.

You can often judge whether to replace one panel or the entire door by the age of the door. If the door is only a few years old, replacing one panel is probably a feasible option. If the door is 10 years old, you should consider replacing the entire thing.

You Must Choose The Right Panel

The second thing to realize if you decide to replace just one panel is that you will have to find out the exact specifications of the door. You will need to know the type of door it is, the manufacturer, and the size. You will also have to carefully inspect the door so that you know exactly what the panel looks like. Some doors have square shapes in them, while others may have rectangles.

If you do not choose the right panel to use for the replacement, you could end up with a panel that doesn't match the others. This will stand out and could make the door look even worse than it did with the dent in it.

Matching the panels is another reason it may be better to replace an entire door. As garage doors age, the colors may fade. When you put a brand new panel up on an old door, it may stand out simply because of the fading on the other panels.

You Must Take The Entire Door Down

Finally, if you are planning on doing the job yourself, it's important to realize that the job may be bigger than you expected. Replacing one panel usually requires taking down the entire door, which may be more work than you had planned.
