Common Forced Air Heating Questions Answered

The cold winter months can expose you to dangerously low temperatures, and while there are many different heating systems you can choose for your home, forced air has numerous benefits over other types of heating. However, if you have only had radiant heat in your home, you may have a couple of questions about these systems before you decide whether this is a good upgrade for your home.

How Are Forced Air And Radiant Heating Systems Different?

Many homes that have boilers or furnaces rely on radiant heating. Under these systems, hot water or steam is circulated through a series of radiators that are installed throughout the home. The heat from these substances is transferred from the metal tubing of the radiator to the air. Unfortunately, these systems can take a very long time to heat a building because they rely on passive heat transfer.

In contrast, a forced air heating system operates by using air to transfer heat into the building. This works by having a fan push cool air over the primary heating coil. This coil will heat the air as it is moved through the home, and this method of heating can rapidly increase the temperature of your house especially when compared to radiant heating.

What Type Of Maintenance Do These Heating Systems Require?

Some individuals may not want to upgrade to force air heating systems because they assume they will be maintenance intensive. Luckily, this is not the case, and a forced air heating system will actually require very little maintenance.

The only routine maintenance required by a forced air heating system is an every year servicing by a trained professional. During these service calls, the motor is tuned, inspected and lubricated. Also, the system is cleaned to help ensure proper airflow, and these inspections will allow the technician to discover minor problems before they develop into major issues. While these service calls can seem somewhat inconvenient, it should be noted that every type of heating system should be tuned and inspected on a yearly basis to ensure it functions properly the entire winter.

Choosing a new heating system for your home can be a daunting task to go through, and there is a chance that you may not understand the basics of forced air heating systems. By learning the answers to these two common questions, you can help ensure that you do not overlook the valuable advantages offered by installing forced air heating in your home.
